Facts about York

York is the oldest inland town in Western Australia, situated on the Avon River, 97 kilometres (60 mi) east of Perth in the Wheatbelt, on Ballardong Nyoongar land,[4] and is the seat of the Shire of York.
JS Clarkson proposed the region’s name during an expedition in October 1830 due to its resemblance to his own English county, Yorkshire.

Europeans first settled in the area in 1831, two years after settling in Perth in 1829, following thousands of years of occupation by the Ballardong Nyoongar people. The release of town allotments in 1835 led to the establishment of a town, with the first buildings erected in 1836.
