What do you do if a leak turns into a pesky problem and drowns your carpets in copious amounts of water? Here is a brief guide to help you care for wet carpets and prevent mould from taking over the fabric.

Get rid of the moisture

This is the most vital step of cleaning your wet carpets. Use a wet vacuum cleaner to suck out the water. You can always rent one if it seems like an unnecessary expense to buy your own wet vacuum cleaner. Afterwards, leave the fans on and windows open to air dry the carpets. You can even rent high power drying fans.

Check your furniture

You should check the furniture, especially those with upholstery to see if moisture has affected those. You will need to give extra attention to upholstered pieces. Try to get rid of moisture and save as many pieces of furniture as possible. But, you may have to replace some of the furniture.

Turn to a dehumidifier

Dehumidifiers get rid of excessive moisture to cool the air in the room and limit mildew growth. Dehumidifiers work a little bit like vacuum cleaners. They suck in air along with moisture and blow the air back into the room.

Buy new carpet padding

After a serious case of flooding or leak, your carpet padding will most probably be permanently damaged. Buy new padding to prevent your stylish carpet from becoming a breeding ground for mould.

Baking soda can work wonders

Sprinkle baking soda on your wet carpets and let it sit for about 30 minutes. Vaccum your carpets and enjoy the absence of that pungent smell.

Steam clean the carpets

Steam cleaning can remove toxins and deodorize your carpets. You should steam the carpets at a higher temperature to kill all toxins. The steam cleaner will suck out dead mould spores as well.

Sanitize the room

If water touched the walls and other surfaces, you should sanitize all these surfaces to prevent the onset of damage. Simply, use a bucket of soapy water to clean all surfaces thoroughly. It would require a lot of elbow grease.

Hire a carpet cleaning service

Water damage can cause problems even much later if you don’t care for your carpets and nearby surfaces properly. You can either hire a professional carpet cleaning service provider to take care of the problem entirely or just let them service your carpets after you take care of the immediate damage.
